The Difference Between Staking and Swaging Bearing Tool?

When you need to assemble parts, there are many ways of doing it. Of course, you can use screws, rivets, and adhesive or filler metal, but sometimes, all that is required is to bend and fold on one part so that it can be secured around another. To do this, you must make sure that your parts are made up of a malleable material that can easily be staked or swaged using a pneumatic, hydraulic, or electromechanical press. Staking and Staking Bearing Tools

The staking process is used to install a bearing with a v-groove into an assembly or housing component. In staking, a v-shaped groove is cut by applying downward pressure around the face of the bearing raceway, and the material outside of this groove will be pressed into a chamfer forming a v-shape of the housing. This is accomplished with a staking tool for better adhesion between parts during installation for improved strength.

The anvil staking tool has a v-groove with chamfered edges and can be used with a hydraulic, mechanical, or pneumatic press. They are commonly utilized along with the cover of window lifter motors, used as a guiding ring on timing belt pulleys, and in certain bearings to supplement the interference fit.

Staking is a defined and controllable pressure application, and it requires less time than swaging. Additionally, they require less space for operation applications and are more budget-friendly than swaging tools. Though, if applied incorrectly, the drawbacks of staking can include partial or incomplete contact between the bearing v-groove and housing chamber. As staking requires high installation pressure, coupled with unfavorable component dimensions, the overall risk of affecting a bearing’s ring dimensions increases, potentially leading to more inspection failures.

Swaging and Swaging Bearing Tools

Swaging involves using a drill press or other similar device to form a bearing v-groove onto one's assembly. This is done by moving the material inward or outward radially to create an edge or rim to obtain proper clearance or torque. They are also employed on seat belt retractors, swivel joints, anti-lock brake system cartridges, and stent equipment for cardiovascular procedures.

Two types of swaging tools are available: two wheel bearing swages and tri-roller bearing swages. The two-wheel swaging tool is perfect for anyone working with bearings. In addition, it can be modified to accommodate different size requirements, eliminating the need for excessive forces. The tri-roller swaging tool design comprises three rollers set at 120 degrees, ensuring optimal rolling friction when forming the perfect v-groove onto a housing unit or assembly.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Swaging

Swaging has many benefits when compared to staking. It offers a better surface finish, and there are increased chances of achieving circumferential contact between a bearing v-groove and housing chamfer. Moreover, swaging creates low axial pressure, reducing the overall impact on the bearing’s outer ring and liner, and such tools are also available in portable versions.

The drawbacks of swaging include the increased chances of damaging the v-groove during prolonged working conditions due to materials hardening. In addition, swaging should only be done by an experienced operator, especially where situations require more space for tooling. Furthermore, they are also relatively more expensive when compared to staking tools.
